Beautiful area. Lots of walking trails into the wildlife. Tours of the house itself are pretty cool. Very informative guides. I highly recommend checking this place out! It can be a challenge to find but there are signs that clearly mark the way here. So watch closely!
Amazing history and very educational
This is an important area and history along with the Fort Winnebago Surgeons Quarters. My only criticism is the history of tribal people like the Ho Chunk is still dumbed down to something "unfair". Though we have made strides, the way this history is described still way undercuts the reality of what our early government perpetrated against these tribes.
There is so much history in Portage. We really enjoyed our tour. Thank you
We loved learning about the history of the Portage area and about frontier life in this house. Many new insights were given about relations between natives and new settlers. Very interesting household items were described and stories were told about the federal agent and his family that lived in the house for a short while in a time of great upheaval for the Ho-Chunk people. The docent's enthusiasm for her subject and knowledge of the area through generational history made for a very enjoyable and enriching tour.
